Belur Math is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Its founder was Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Located on the west bank of the Hooghly River near Kolkata, it covers an area of about 40 acres and is one of the largest in Kolkata and West Bengal. Which has been working silently since being involved in many social welfare work.
Things to do at Belur Math:
There are several temples in the premises of Belur Math. The main temple is of Ramakrishna deb. The temple is notable for its architecture. If you look closely at the structure of the temple, you will understand that the temple was built by Christian, Islam, Hindu and Buddhist architecture. Which is a symbol of harmony of all religions. Many people gather at Belur Math every year irrespective of their religion or belief. Here is no religious offering made. Flowers and sweets are not offered. Here are more temples like of Maa Sarada, Swami Vivekananda and more . In addition to the temple, there is a museum and a few education centres in the temple premises.
The evening aarati (Prayer) at Belur Math is held every evening at 5:30 p.m. . The evening bell is rung before Aarti. After this bell, no one is allowed to walk around the math premises or enter any temple other than the temple of Ramakrishna deb. Aarti's song is sung for Sri Ma Sarada and Ramakrishna Dev. All the visitors sitting in the temple participates in this aarati in unison.
In 2003, the Belur Math Railway Station was inaugurated near the Belur Math, which is dedicated to the Belur Math Temple.
You can visit the temples here. Belur Math has been built on the banks of river Ganga or Hughli. So you can spend some time sitting on the grassy math premises on the banks of the Ganges. You can also visit the museum. Where various things used by Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Dev, Maa Sarada, Sister Nivedita are kept in good care. The schedule of the museum is given above.
How I can get Bhog at Belur Math
Distribution of bhog (prasad/food) begins at 11 am at Belur Math. With just a nominal charge, you can make advance bookings from specific counters to enjoy this. This advance booking is done daily from 8 am to 10:30 am. After the booking you can get your bhog standing in the cue after 11 a.m.
After that, Math is closed from 1 pm to 4 pm. At that time no visitors are allowed inside. However, various festivals of Belur Math, for example- Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Dev, Sarada Mother's birthday are exceptions to this rule. During these days, the Belur Math is very crowded, people are busy all day long, food is distributed to all, the monastery authorities organize various ceremonies and fairs are held inside and outside the math. If you want, you can visit Belur Math on any such day.
Afterwards you can visit the nearest place of interest, Dakshineswar by water ways, or a bus, Toto or cab by road to visit the nearest place of interest, Dakshineswar. If you want to see the evening aarati at Belur Math, you can go to Dakshineswar from Belur Math at noon and come back to Belur Math effortlessly in the evening. And if you want to go directly back to Howrah or Kolkata, there are many government and private buses besides cabs from Belur Math and Dakshineswar.

By road:
From airport or from any other point of the city you can book a cab to reach Belur Math.
And if you want to use public transport then first come to Howrah station. From there take any bus going to Bali or Belur to reach Belur Math.
There are Auto and Toto also. In this case you have to take Auto or Toto from Howrah station and get off at Salkia stand. From there you have to take another auto or Toto to Belur Math. This is because a Toto or Auto has a specific route. Drivers do not drive outside.
By train:
There are two railway station near belur Math. One is Belur Math and the other one is Belur. Belur Math station is situated in just opposite of the main gate of Belur Math but only a few trains do run into this station from Howrah Station. On the other hand you can get a lot of trains from Howrah to Belur Station. But the distance from Belur Station to Belur Math is a little far. You will easily get a rickshaw or toto from Belur to reach Belur Math for only Rs. 10/ 20.
